Comments on the learning outcomes and how and to what extent the course helped you reach these goals.
To be honest, before attending this course I did not have enough ideas about corpus linguistics. This course has certainly helped me advance a lot in the corpus based research areas. As there were a good number of participants, demands and needs of every individual may not be met. But the course was eye opening and thought provoking.

Summary of student comments

How could this course be improved or developed?

Comments made here point to a wish for more detailed feedback on course assignments and more detailed instructions for some of the assignments – the final essay, the abstract and the instructions for the peer review process are mentioned specifically. Some students found it difficult to interpret what to do and also how to improve what they had done.

Some students comment that they found that the workload of the course was too heavy and that they believe that it is necessary that the teachers look for ways to reduce the workload, perhaps by looking at how the course fits in with the students’ other courses.  One student commented that there were too few sessions for such rich course content – more hands on practice and practical sessions are necessary.

There are some comments about how it was difficult to have the practical sessions online, and that it would have been great with more support in the practical sessions, but the teachers’ efforts in dealing with the difficult situation are highly appreciated.

One student asks for more reading on how to use CL software and programs, and one student asks for a session on how to use Antconc and Sketch engine.

What was the best thing about this course?

Mentioned here were the practical application of corpora, the chance to choose a topic relevant for the examination, the course environment, and the fact that the course was relevant to thesis work.

What advice would you like to give to new students about to take this course?

Advice included notes on how to prepare for seminars: to always download relevant files and programs prior to the lecture, to make sure that you devote plenty of time for the course, to carefully choose a topic that you find interesting for the course assignments.

Summary of teachers' comments

The teachers note that the course seems to have been useful for the students, which they find rewarding. They also find that the evaluation provides interesting insights towards the improvement of the course.

Several comments are made in this respect. The teachers note that although some students found the workload heavy, they find the workload appropriate for a MA course. However, they also consider making some reductions in the reading material or the assignments in the future.

The teachers sympathize with the wish for more practical sessions. They find that this need might in part be related to the particular situation this term with online teaching, but also comment that it is difficult to cover the basics in theory and practice in corpus linguistics in just 8 sessions. One way forward could be to split the course in two parts - Corpus Linguistics 1 and Corpus Linguistics 2 -  where Corpus Linguistics 1 is  introductory and theoretical, and Corpus Linguistics 2 is more practical. Another way would be to allocate more practical sessions in the existing course -  perhaps as optional sessions. One or two optional sessions may work wonders, particularly towards the end of the course.

In terms of the type of feedback provided during the course, one of the instructors note that there could have been more specific positive feedback included in the assignments. There was a tendency that the parts of the assignment that worked well received general praise while parts that needed development received more explicit feedback.

The teachers also comment that the Zoom teaching environment involved some problems compared to a campus environment. The space and opportunity for students to ask questions and discuss among each other were reduced, it seemed, and it was difficult for the teachers to gauge understanding. It was also difficult to get to know each other well.

Possible changes

Slightly reduced reading assignments
Two added optional hands-on sessions
